Best Stretching Resource I've Encountered

This book provides:

1. A systematic approach for identifying your movement restrictions and designing a program to resolve them

2. Clear instruction on effective stretching, with a focus on developing the right combination of mobility and stability

3. Specific guidelines for incorporating soft tissue work with a therapy ball into your exercise program

My personal experience applying just the stretching guidelines has been the following:

1. My hips have opened quite a bit. I can comfortably drop into a deep squat.

2. Foot pain I have had for almost a year is quickly going away

3. A shoulder problem I went to physical therapy for but never quite finished fixing is rapidly improving

I've got the recommended equipment for the trigger point therapy on the way (a $10 Footsie roller and a $15 Fitball). If it does as much for me as the stretching has, I'm going to be a very happy person.

On a professional basis, I've been certified by the ACSM as a Health / Fitness Instructor since 2002. I was certified by ACE as a Personal Trainer in 2000. I've read a number of other stretching books and watched several DVDs. This book is the clearest out of any of them, and is one of the few to recognize being overly flexible is just as bad as not being flexible enough. It's also one of the few to address the concept of promoting soft tissue quality to reduce risk of injury.

Considering the price relative to other fitness products on the market, everyone should own a copy and apply the guidelines. Diligent attention to a sound program of mobility work will have more immediate impact on quality of life and ease of movement than just about any other form of exercise.

This book will stetch your brain as well

As a runner I purchased this book in hopes to understand why, how and when to stretch. The book answered the how and why in detail. As far as when, well that is what this book is all about. There is no one answer. The book tries to offer you a way to customize your own stretching program based on your needs. It walks you though a thorough assessment to help guide you on what stretches you would want to perform before and after your event or exercise (ie. running). Where the book fails is the ability to really implement a customized program. After reading it the entire book I was left with more knowledge but very little on implementation. I did incorporate many of the stretches in the book in my routine and changed a few things before and after my run as far as the type of stretches. I would suggest this book for anyone looking to put meaning to the stretches.

My 9 Year Old Son's Best Book Ever

My 9 year old son absolutely adored this book! He loved the humor and, also being an avid video gamer, was captivated by the plot. Although it is quite a thick book, he read it for hours at a time and finished it within a couple of days. He said that it was, without doubt, the best book he has ever read and is genuinely quite worried that it may be the best book he will ever read!

I know it was a short story BUT I just kind of expected more. I would have rathered the author spend more time talking about Peyton and Jared than talking about Jared's brother and his dysfunctional relationship with Sara. I am a helpless romantic but this didn't do it for me.

Fantastic for Beginners

This is one of a couple of books I read cover to cover and over again before I bought my first lathe. The information is fantastic and easy to understand, although it would have helped if I had a lathe at the same time when he was explaining tool techniques but it was easy enough to pick up quickly once I got started.
The projects are good as well giving you a place to get yourself started if you are looking at that chunk of wood with only a blank picture in your head.
A month later I am going strong with my lathe, turning bowls, goblets, coasters, dibbers etc but I still constantly refer to Keith's book when I need a little help so it has been well worth every cent
To all people thinking about woodturning as a new hobby, this book is an absolute must.

The best beginner lathe book!

I looked at many different lathe books. I bought this one and Ernie Conovers.

This book focuses more on proper techniques, and rules of turning with many examples.

This shows you practically every type of cut you could make on any project you'll likely encounter. How to choose the wood, prepare the stock, the right tool and the best technique in many, many clearly illustrated examples.

Based on what I need to do, I'll look through this book and find an example that most closely approximates what I need to get done and follow the rules.

Between both of them I have enough solid basic information on turning technique, lathe accessory use, proper tool choice, sharpening and grinding etc.

I've found them to be indispensible resources for the beginner.

Absolutely THE BEST book for beginning turners

If you want to learn to turn wood, this is the book for you. Keith's explanations on tool use, the illustrations, and sharpening instruction are top notch. Most woodturning books sound like some 4 dimensional game of twister when describing the use of a tool. Keith keeps it simple and easy to understand. Sharpening turning tools is one of the most daunting tasks a beginner faces, but Keith makes it simple to understand. I HIGHLY recommend this book (and I have a ton of turning books to compare it to).

As an MA English grad student who is studying turn-of-the-century popular literature, this is valuable to me, but--

If you are looking for a modern romance, do not read this. Engaged couples don't even kiss in these books because that would be scandalous. If they do, it's not mentioned in the book. This is a early 1900's romance. Garvice was not even considered to be a great writer by literary critics. But he was the most popular author in Britain and very much loved by American readers as well. If you want to understand the reading tastes of the general populace in America and Britain during this time of history, capture a feel for what they loved, then read Garvice's books, and this is a nice little collection of some of his reader's favorites. Don't get me wrong--I'm not saying they are horrible to read, in fact, they are light entertainment, always have a happy ending, and the good guys always win. If this is your style, and you love the Edwardian period of history, with all its formalities and trappings, and you don't mind melodramatic literature, and you have modest sensibilities about how far your romance reading should go, than this would be the perfect book for you, even though it is over 100 years old. As a student of literature, studying the time period, his works are valuable to me. I would suggest browsing one of the Kindle options first to make sure this is what you want. It's not for everybody, but there are a select few who might absolutely love Charles Garvice. If that is you, you are in luck! He wrote over 150 novels, and it is a treasure hunt to find old copies. Some, not all, have been reprinted. Good luck!

This book absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible

This book absolutely wrecked me in the best way possible. I read it all in one setting, just like I did with the first book, Undiscovered Gyrl. I pray that this book gets made into a movie as well. Allison Burnett is a literary genius and I can guarantee that I will not be sleeping tonight after reading it. Another Girl answered some of my questions from the last book, but left me with more questions than before. I would recommend Undiscovered Gyrl, Another Girl, and the movie Ask Me Anything to absolutely anyone. They're all incredible.

Sequel was well worth the wait

I've been waiting a long time for a sequel to Undiscovered Gyrl, and this did not disappoint. I devoured the whole thing in one sitting. I had to remind myself that the story wasn't real, but anyone who read the previous book knows how good Allison Burnett is at writing realistic female protagonists. Hopefully this one becomes a film too!

'When I don’t understand something, I tend to overthink it until my anxiety is out of control.’

Allison Burnett is able to absorb every facet of his created characters so completely that each of his books gives the reader the feeling that the first person narrator is the actual writer. Visit his previous books - CHRISTOPHER: A TALE OF SEDUCTION and THE HOUSE BEAUTIFUL - and try to be convinced that the idiosyncratic characters are not real and writing their own memoirs. In UNDISCOVERED GYRL Burnett further challenge himself by writing a novel in the first person who happens to be both a girl and a female artifice created by the media we now live by - the Internet. He manages to make this Katie creation so credible that her incredibility works! Who is she really - spoiled mouthy high school graduate or the femme fatale she creates with the device of the blog? Because a film was made of this latter book Allison has written a brief but pungent sequel – ANOTHER GIRL.

Burnett's writing style is so fluid that he makes this initially wild idea for a novel capture the reader's attention and makes us go along with the preposterous shenanigans of a character about whom we know little except for the persona she manufactures, scratching our heads at times trying to figure out how the deception will play out, while most of the time just voyeuristically going along for the ride. He knows his craft and after his sojourns into the edgy worlds of his previous two novels, he has the guts to pull us further into those places most of us only silently peek at as we surf the Internet.

As the synopsis states,’ Katie decides to defer from college for a year saying she doesn't know what she wants to do in her future, but in reality is exploring her sexual options. She creates an anonymous blog detailing the different aspects of her life but especially highlighting her sexual activity. She gets involved with numerous men at once and is forced to make difficult decisions regarding her future that she didn't expect to make so soon in her life.’

Though very short (only 53 pages) it is completely entertaining both as a story and as a real examination of where we are now in this distorted world of quasi-real communication and identities! Highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 15

José van Dijck is Professor of Comparative Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she also served as Dean of Humanities.

Excellent and much needed analysis of social media

I have been teaching Social Media online for the MA media studies program for several years at The New School in New York City and had never found a completely satisfactory book that provided a theoretical and historical grounding for social media until I came across this one. It is a thorough, well written, scholarly yet still very accessible description and analysis of the media, communication and sociological foundations from which the current social media phenomenon has emerged. I learned a lot too from the author, and it was an enjoyable read as well.

I plan on using it as a required text for all the future classes I teach in social media.

I thought that this book had a lot of valuable information about different social media platforms and their privacy policies, however at times I thought it was not a very engaging read. It was great for detailed information in terms of breaking down each media platform and taking a look into their business models, technology, ownership, users and governance. I also thought that it was good if you are interested in the history of technology and social media. It not only gives you the background of social media and how it started, but somewhat of technology itself. She talks about the development of the World Wide Web by Tim Burners Lee, which is crucial for the start of social media. It takes a deep look into how each platform operates and how they will continue to progress forward with this push of social media. It talks about how social media is what we will all be using in the future and its important as marketers and PR people to get rid of the digital divide that we still have going on. We want everyone to be able to understand social media and how it works because that is our future. We will be doing most things online and through connectivity.

I am a journalism student and this book was a great way to finish my last semester in an interesting read, giving my brain a break from the technical and hands-on knowledge and letting myself, at times, get lost in the way our culture can forget how "social" media all began. This book gives details and in-depth overview about the history of social media that Journalism 101 classes can only touch on in a short period of time. Journalism classes today are trying to keep up with the technology and focus their classes on new media however, Jose Van Dijck's "The Culture of Connectivity: A Critical History of Social Media," takes readers back to Napster, and back to when it all began with Web 2.0, what is referred in the book as vital time for making connections on the internet.

Van Dijck makes her book relevant by showing her readers that social connectivity thrives on 5 platforms: ownership, technology, governance, business model, user/ usage, and content. In each chapter the reader learns how various media works in these platforms and why our culture is not taking notice of important changes such as privacy matters. Read this book if you want a philosophical look into what users of media today would knock-off as being a non-philosophical topic, however, they may realize it may only appear this way because it's changed a culture and isn't slowing down yet.
