About the Author

ED LIPIANSKY has worked for Varian Associates, Tandem Computers, Sun Microsystems, Google, and Cisco Systems in Silicon Valley. He is the author or coauthor of six patents and has taught at the University of California, Berkeley and Santa Cruz Extensions. He lives with his family in the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California.

Nice!! Fundamentals to Advanced without Mystifying

I was looking for a book to give to my daughter in college...one that would make her love the subject, not loathe it eventually, or use to try and somehow get through with barely adequate grades,only to happily forget it forever. I am a Physics double post-grad, brought up in the Feynman style of explaining and understanding: feed the intuition, but stick solidly to the facts. Ed's book, I pleasantly found does just that...he starts at the very basics...and ramps up to advanced topics skillfully, never leaving the reader behind. He often writes out the equation in almost text style sometimes: like R_parallel equivalent = product of both divided by sum of both. Now that is how it sticks to the memory forever...that is how I remember it on the job, funny no textbook could tell you that off the bat.

Ed's book moves very effortlessly into a particularly enlightening chapter where he explains in order: Superposition principle, the Thevenin method, Norton's method, the Mesh method, the Nodal method, then summarizes these such as: Superposition Theorem Highlights: It is is divide and conquer approach....etc. then shows the same circuit, solved by all the methods so you can decide which one suits you the most! Very nice. No mystification. To the point.

Ed moves similarly through Op-amps, comparators, BJTs, MOSFETs, and then over to binary numbers, Karnaugh maps, logic gates (explained brilliantly I thought), decoders/encoders, adders, latches...state machines and finally: a simple CPU design.

Ed is trying to explain and make you love the subject as much as he obviously does. One of the memorable quotes attributed to Feynman is: "If you can't explain something to a first year student, then you haven't really understood it..."

That is why I am happily loaning this to my daughter (I intend to steal it back on weekends to refresh myself).

Excellent backup text for 2nd and 3rd yr computer engineering

When I was in university, I studied computer engineering and found it difficult - the topics are very abstract and the pace of new material moves very quickly.
Aside from doing all the exercises I could, I found that having an alternate textbook was also very helpful. It was great to get a second perspective on complex subjects and to hear things explained slightly differently from way it was explained in the course textbook. My favorite alternate digital design books, for example, were by M. Morris Mano but these are dated now, most likely so I'd hesitate to recommend them.

However this book by Ed Lipiansky falls into this same category but it goes one further because it wraps up the content of many computer engineering undergrad courses into one book: basic RLC circuits, semiconductors, logic design, state machines, and an intro to computer architecture all in one book.

I think it's an excellent reference but most of all I think it's an excellent book for undergrad computer engineering students to help them get through many of the tough classes.

the Author does a great job at 'spoon feeding' abstract topics.
while many textbooks tend to stay at higher level he tries to do both the higher level and cover the details.
while the text may look 'long' it pays off especially for interview preparation or for someone who is new to the
topics.
