Why settling makes sense

On Settling is a great little book. It gives us readers a standard philosophical analysis of a common term that we all use, settling. The book's main virtue is that Goodin is able to use conceptual analysis to show us (successfully, in my mind) that settling is much deeper than our common thoughts on it, and is something to aim for, not avoid. Settling may take a variety of forms (e.g. settling on vs. settling up), but it actually provides us with the freedom to pursue those things that are meaningful to us, particularly as we face too many commitments and too little time.
As he notes early on, settling is often considered a negative choice, something we're forced to do that isn't in our best interest. It's clearly not our top choice. But Goodin's definition is both functional and enlightening; to settle is to commit fully to a decision, but not permanently. Settling requires that we stay with a course of action, but leave open the option to reconsider and revise our choices after some extended period of time.
Goodin contrasts settling with striving, which can commit us to endlessly aiming for the best option. The quest to maximize our choices leaves many decisions reconsidered, and therefore unsettled. But there is freedom which comes with not burdening ourselves with additional information, and the added difficulty of reopening a decision we've made. At some point, we must commit to a choice. This freedom redirects our focus to things that deserve our attention, and is particularly valuable for longer-term commitments in our lives. In this way, his approach is very pragmatic; most of us are pluralists when it comes to what we care about, and without settling on at least some decisions, we face gridlock if we can't commit our attention to what's important. Settling lets us do that.
The third chapter is short, but instructive; it tells us what settling is not. It's not to make a decision to give up permanently (by resigning to a choice), or one that you take for the sake of permanency (by being conservative), or simply to give something up (by compromising). Each instance of settling may involve both intrapersonal and interpersonal aspects to taking a decision, whether by individuals or institutions. But to move forward without being too mercurial or fickle, settling gives us the ability to narrow our choices for our own benefit, to fit within a plan of action (this is explored in Chapter 2).
Ultimately, I think Goodin's main contribution is to give us the philosophical grounding for settling that will not only justify us using it more, but show why it has an application for many decisions we take, mundane and significant. He shows settling to be not only meaningful throughout history, but also necessary for many of the strong commitments we make during our lives.

To Settle or to Strive?

Settling and Striving should not be seen in opposition to one another but complementary as both are needed to navigate through life. How can you discern when to settle and when to strive? This seems to be the main issue that Robin E. Goodin addresses in 'On Settling.' In the book he covers a variety of modes of settling and explains the value of settling as an important part of life. From a settled position comes the discernment and the gusto to strive in certain vital areas of life. At times the book is a bit boring when it hits the historical and philosophical notes of settling but it soon passes as does the short length of the book. But it was worth the read and those feeling restless in life may find some needed direction and encouragement.
