The Road to Chess Mastery, by Dr. Max Euwe, Dr. Walter Meiden

Chess players often reach a certain level and subsequently seem unable to become any stronger. They attain solid and even promising positions without having any well formulated ideas of how to continue the game. They frequently do not understand the strategic requirements of the niceties which go into the building up of a strong position. The Road to Chess Mastery is a collection of 25 games annotated specifically for the purpose of showing how to improve their chess. All phases of chess technique are included: discussions of the basic ideas behind modern openings, explanations of the handling of typical middle game positions, consideration of certain endgames, examples of the kind of technical analysis a chess player must make before deciding on the next move. Through an introduction that explains how the ordinary chess player can improve in the various phases of the game of chess, and in enlightening commentaries far more extensive than space permits in an ordinary annotated game, former World Champion Dr. Max Euwe shows how a chess player should think, by indicating the moves for all but the most obvious moves of each game. By applying what he learns in this work the reader may, indeed, find himself traveling the road to chess mastery.

Even better than Nunn's "Understanding Chess Move By Move"
By A Customer
//
Too many reviewers give 5 stars to chess books that do not deserve high praise. I think highly of this Max Euwe book, so I give it 4 stars.
This book is suited to USCF players rated under 1599.
This book is comparable to John Nunn's fine book "Understanding Chess Move By Move". Nunn gives richer explanations of advanced middlegame strategies than does Euwe. But Euwe does better at explaining the openings than does Nunn. Both books are entertaining, Nunn's more so. Nunn annotates real games, Euwe annotates composed games between a Master vs. Amateur.
EXCERPT: After 1. d24 Ng8f6 2. c24 e76 3. Nb1c3 Bf8b4, Euwe explains 4. Qd1c2 as follows.
"On QB2, the Queen renews the positional threat of P-K4 and, by protecting the QN, affords White the possibility of avoiding the doubling of his Pawns if Black should play ...BxN ch.
The question of whether or not Black should exchange his KB for White's QN is of considerable theoretical importance. A number of comparative values are involved in the question, which shows on what delicate considerations master play is sometimes based. If Black voluntarily plays ...BxN without being forced to do so by White's P-QR3, it may not be worthwhile for Black to give up the advantage of the two Bishops in order to leave White with the disadvantage of doubled Pawns. But it is certainly worthwhile for Black to make this exchange if White has to lose a tempo by P-QR3..."
Tho this book was written decades ago, its content will never need updating. More copies of this book should be printed. Unfortunately, some of the physical aspects of this book are poor: page size is too small making the book hard to hold open, diagrams are shaded poorly, binding cracks early and often, descriptive notation.

An excellent manual for the C-B player
By A Customer
This book picks up where Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur leaves off. The players encountered by the masters here appear to range from "B" players through strong Expert. This is a unique book in the long list of chess manuals for intermediate players. First, it provides excellent instruction in the openings. Every game showcases a particular system and illustrates ideas for both sides with thorough explanations, not just a lot of variations. Second, it is an outstanding guide to the middle game -- particularly of the thematic positions and pawn structures that arise from the illustrated openings. It is a shame that this book is out of print. If you can find a copy of this venerable book -- grab it!

Really a great work!
By A Customer
It is unfortunate that this book is out of print. I happened to buy this book many years ago, and was totally captured by Euwe style of writing. Euwe explains each and every move in greatest detail, also talks abt the wrong moves in a given position. This book helped me to improve my game considerably. Euwe also focusses on the main opening lines, especially Ruy-Lopez open and closed variation, which is my favorite. I would highly recommend this book if you can find it!
