Robert M. Martin is Professor of Philosophy at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia in Canada. He has authored several books on philosophy, including The Philosopher's Dictionary.

Very informative.

Although the book is part of a beginner's guide series, I found it quite detailed with well chosen 'case studies.' I am no philosophy major; yet, I have some exposure to Epistemology concepts. I found the book accessible and more than covered by needs. I did not rate it 5 stars only because I could not compare this to other works on the subject.

A very thoughtful introduction to epistemology

I used this book in an introductory course on "epistemology across the curriculum," and I definitely recommend it. The "beginner's guide" subtitle is accurate -- this is certainly not for an advanced student of epistemology -- but it may also mislead potential readers into thinking that the book is a superficial treatment of the subject matter. It definitely isn't. The range of topics is impressive, from Plato's definition of knowledge to the well known Gettier cases, from internalist vs externalist accounts of justification to foundationalism vs coherentism as explanations of the structure of knowledge. Also valuable are the next to the last chapter, on skepticism, and the very last one, on current trends in epistemology. If you are curious about human knowledge, its structure and its justification, you really need to read this book.
