is the absolute best I have read

I have read close to 25 rock biographies in the past year and this, by far, is the absolute best I have read. Admittedly, I am a Bill Bruford fan but the writing style and level of attention Bill gives to his life story is purely engaging. Instead of opting for the usual haphazard and often profane meat and potatoes approach other contemporaries opted for in their bios, Bruford takes a strongly analytical, measured and, frankly, completely refreshing approach to his 40+ years as one of rock's premier prog drummers. From Yes's frenetic gig-hopping early years that led to the seminal "Fragile" to the even more painstaking world of Robert Fripp and the 3rd incarnation of King Crimson that built up and then disbanded within 3 short years, Bill lets us look inside the thoughts feelings and rationale of how things worked and exactly what he thought of it all. Unique in humor (it is often humorous and downright hysterical---see his description of the arduous world of the interviewed touring musician and the the ubiquitous Mellotron). Anything you wanted to know and more about the man, his love for jazz and his philopshies and thoughts are here for all to enjoy. A must read!!

Must read for the Yes or King Crimson fan!

Bill Bruford has always been my favorite, so I was excited to read his story. It is way more than I could have asked for. His writing style really lets you get to know his inner thoughts, and he tells you each story in a detailed, quirky and sometimes side splitting way. On of my favorite antidotes is his story about a found-in-the-trash cymbal that he fell in love with and played to death on 'Red' -- a true musician's story. Another funny story (at least when told from perspective) is the mega-bucks electronic drum kit that fails just before his drum solo in Madison Square Garden. He explains the whys of leaving Yes and retiring the music business in depth. A musician could also benefit from his honesty and insight into the economics of the music biz. Some of his financial mistakes are examined with his characteristic English humor. I liked this book so much that I am re-reading it. All I can say is thank you to Bill for simply the best rock autobiography I have ever read.

Lots of funny moments, the dark side of the music business

Bill Bruford gives an insight and accounting of his career as a progressive rock/jazz drummer all the way up to his time with his own band Earthworks. Lots of funny moments, the dark side of the music business, the equipment trials and tribulations, the grind of touring, and how his insecurity as an accomplished musician seems to hang over him all the time. He doesn't mince words about people and his likes and dislikes. One will be surprised to learn these things from a reserved Englishman who sat behind the drums of some of the top bands of our time. The book is written from the heart as he sums it up that he was very fortunate to have made music that people still listen to and he was lucky to work for 40 years as a professional performing musician.
