About the Author
Peter B. Moyle is coauthor of Fishes: An Introduction to Ichthyology (1988). He is Professor of Fisheries Biology at the University of California, Davis. Chris Mari van Dyck, who trained as a fish biologist, is a professional illustrator living in McAllen, Texas.

Superb Overview of Fish and Their Habitats

This book is a relatively easy read for those new to or continuing their education of the piscine. The classes of fish get a brief overview, and then each water environment and its citizens get a nice explanation. Each chapter ends in a few suggestions for pursuing first hand experience by studying fish in local or vacation sites.

I have stumbled through the "Fishes of the World," which has highly technical descriptions of the fish families, and found this a much easier read as well as a good top level review. The illustrations are are mostly nice drawings, with additional color illustrations of some specific fish environments. There are also nice graphs illustrating fish environments and showing relative populations of fishes found in those environments.

As the preface states, this is a book for those interested in fish who are not trained ichthyologists. My thanks to the author's wife, who pointed out that the original text was boring, because the revamp is much, much better and not boring.

I bought this book as an alternative to buying it in a school's bookstore and saved about $40. It's in great condition. The cover was a bit beat up but the pages were fine and the book's spine was as if it was brand new. For used it is in a very good condition.

A very loving romance set in a world I know little about

Sometimes it's really good to get a look at what fits into the "romance" template. It really makes you define your standards. As a person who reads a fair number of romance novels, the majority of which contain intercourse (or other sexual activity, and dictated by genders), I know that a lot of people think that romance has to have physical chemistry.

But I think at the core of my definition of romance, there is the evolution of a relationship with a resolution that is satisfying to all the participants. The rest is set-dressing.

In this case, the setting is really unusual for the romances I read -- almost everyone in the story is an observant Muslim in modern London, and that pervades everything about the book, from the rhythms of the day to the way the lovers feel about how they can interact. They are both conscious of what their boundaries are, and why they might want to violate them and why it's important to hold to them. I never got the feeling that they resented their restrictions, just that they were difficult, which I really appreciated. It's hard to write that state of tension without making a character sound unbearably whiny.

I liked that everyone talks about their faith, and the different ways they get comfort and support from it. I loved the rejection of the possible suitor who I thought of as St. John Eyre, who wanted a collection of good points instead of a partner. There is a glossary in the back! You might want to bookmark it, although the book is written smoothly enough that you can get most things from context. I also really liked that both of the main characters were service-oriented people, and that was part of what made them a good match. It seems more persistent than a shared taste in shoes.

As a romance, it was sweet, but not overwhelmingly good. As a cultural introduction, it was much more elegant than many. The combination was great because it got me through rough patches in both halves of the whole.

Read if: You love a romance that involves long-term consideration of compatibility. You want to understand a bit more about Muslim people who are not all the same caricature.

Skip if: You only read romances for the naughty bit. The first time they touch is after they get married and not onscreen.

Also read: An Assembly Such As This, by Pamela Aiden. It's also a novel on the less sexual and more religious side, this time based on Mr. Darcy and his faith life. No, really! I loved it.

Unique story, A painting in words

So great to read about a love story told from the perspective of Muslim youth who are struggling to keep their relationship virtuous. Although the plot of the story is not action filled, the author keeps her readers' focus by painting a very clear picture of emotions and tiny but telling mannerisms. Very well written.

A great book to catch glimpse of halal romance & the life of practicing Muslims

My first time reading a Love story by a Muslim author and I love it! A great book to catch glimpse of lifestyle taught by Islam.

The mood is different than of the standard love books out there for sure. It has a special aura to it - the story felt 'virgin' and pure. I'm not exactly a teenager but the author managed to transferred me back to my younger years. Remember the days when you were too young to get married but you have crushes anyway? That's it. This book will make you feel giddy all over again!

Muslims or not, this book is perfect for young adults and adults alike. Read it and see if you can say no to the same love stories. You CAN fall in love and keep it HALAL.

Halal means adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the holy book, the Quran.

Riveting and Unique

A witch who goes to uni? Mysterious supernatural entities who who work as baristas? Demons who, despite having cool possession powers, can be a bit dumb? Welcome to Sydney, where supernatural folk mingle with the public and try to lead normal lives- until a spate of mysterious murders pop up, backed by a centuries-old turf war between Witches and Templars. Julien, Isolde, Delilah and Damon find themselves at the centre of it all, and despite their differences- realise that they're the ones who have to sort out this whole mess.

I absolutely loved this story- it's rare to find a paranormal/urban fantasy novel that doesn't let itself get caught up in lightning fast relationships or cliched quick plots. In Thicker than Water, the characters are given space to breathe, which is a big reason why they're so delightful to read about. Allowing relationships and overarching plotlines to develop naturally against a backdrop of shorter, quicker narrative twists really lets the reader learn with & emphasise with the characters- a refreshing change from tradition when it comes to morally grey characters. With such engaging, complex and diverse people leading the story, I was more than happy to let myself get swept along by the plot, and immersed in a rich and interesting fantasy world. As someone who reads a lot of YA/fantasy/paranormal, things can get really repetitive and cliched- Thicker than Water was a breath of fresh air, full of engaged writing, clever remarks, and gorgeous wordy turns of phrases. I'm very excited to see what comes next from such an unique and engaging story world!

A Great Read from Beginning to Jaw Dropping End.

Thicker Than Water takes place in Sydney, Australia where the journey of a Templar, a Witch, and an old soul start to form. Julien and Isolde first meet when Isolde jumps after a man who had just dived off of a bridge. Julien rushes to the underpass below and is shocked when he realizes he can only see the woman because witches, like him, can see through illusions. Isolde is able to heal the suicidal man as well as herself fairly quickly. Julian and Isolde became fast friends from that day on. Not long after, Isolde is on her way back to her apartment after handing out food to a group of homeless individuals in an alley in Blackwattle when she is attacked by demons. A Templar trained in killing witches and Demons, named Delilah, comes to her rescue. The three of them set out to find who are letting demons pass through from hell and soon come across a demon who possessed the body of someone Isolde use to know. After Delilah and Julien try to kill the demon, Isolde steps in, in hopes of healing him. Instead she somehow binds the demon to the body, making him human. Delilah lies to the demon, convincing him that he cannot harm Isolde without harming himself. They name the demon, Damon, who becomes part of their group and comes to be protective over Isolde. Throughout the novel, the histories of Julien, Delilah and Isolde are revealed. It becomes clear the tragic secrets they hold from each other are far more intertwined than they could ever know.

Thicker than Water is one of those books that keep you at the edge of your seat from beginning to jaw dropping end. I’ve read many books that incorporated the classic supernatural; ghosts, witches, demons, nephilim and vampires. This book has a different twist in this regard by placing the demons to the forefront along with the witches as well as a whole new race, Templars. E.L. Rummery did a great job making the characters as well rounded and real as possible. The twists and turns throughout the novel left no holes and always leading to something bigger. I loved how the back story of Delilah and Julien came together to create an ending that leaves you dumbstruck. I look forward to reading the second installment of The Shadow Acts series. I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a different twist on paranormal, mystery books and would like a fresh, dangerous world to step into.

Do not like new format

I have been ordering Accounting Trends & Techniques every 2-3 years to see what accounting methods and disclosures companies are using. The book at one time reviewed 600 firms and then 500 firms. The book indicated how many firms used various accounting methods (FIFO, LIFO, etc). Evidently the 2012 edition changed to reviewing 350 firms but does not disclose the use of various methods. Only the actual disclosures from a particular company(ies) is shown. The are no tables giving the number of companies that use a particular method or entered into a particular transaction (such as issuing a stock dividend). I do not find this edition as useful.
