The Ongoing Grace of God

In 2005 I discovered Bob Hoekstra's well-written devotionals called "Day-by-Day-by-Grace." They flow like a continual study of how God's grace applies to His people in sanctification as well as in justification. My life is slowly being transformed as I learn. I must say, however, that it does not come by knowledge alone, but by consciously trusting God to do the work as I lean on Him day-by-day.

Below is a quote from one of Hoekstra's writings that will provide an example of why I encourage you to purchase the book, read it, and have faith that God will continue with you in your spiritual journey by "grace through faith."

"Our initial encounter with the grace of God involved forgiveness and justification. Rich measures of God's grace washed away our sins and gave us new life in Christ. Of course, that initial justifying work of God could not exhaust His grace. Rather, it was "according to the riches of His grace." There are unlimited riches yet available for our daily sanctification, our ongoing growth in Christ.

Hebrews 13:9 is one of the many places in Scripture that indicates progressive sanctification (that is, growth in godliness) is by grace. "It is good that the heart be established by grace." This truth clearly pertains to sanctification and growth, not justification and new birth.

In order to develop in us an increasingly mature Christ-like walk, our heart must be established. The law of God is not designed to change men's hearts. God's grace is the essential and sufficient cause to bring about this desired work...We have powerful biblical insight...that grace is not only God's provision to forgive and birth us into His family, but grace is also His resource for the ongoing work of maturing us as His children."

Bob Hoekstra is an amazing teacher with a daily message of the Gospel of Grace. I highly recommend it for anyone searching for a mature faith focusing on a true gospel message of salvation by grace apart from works and learning to walk in grace as a believer.

everyone of a philosophical frame of mind should read this book...

I was surprised by what I read. I grapple with and have a hard time accepting Mr. Virilio's (very well thought out) propositions. I know the book is dead-on correct. But my angst is that I don't want to admit in the truth he laid out.

So in fact, the real review is this: this book scares me, deeply. If what Mr Virillio assumes to be true... I don't know... what is that future. Are we doomed? Already lost and trapped in the current of accelerated reality? (Is my angst in fact a rear view mirror of what was...) Ugh...

That being said. The book is really very good, dense, and just like a bullet... perfect in aim.

Apologies if this review is not helpful to you and perhaps overloaded on the reaction side versus thought side. I very much urge everyone of a philosophical frame of mind to read this book.

I can't unread what I read. I can't go back. Thanks Mr. Virilio.

What I don't want to believe is that this book has received so little attention. It is packed with important insights into collective behaviour today. It reflects the information revolutoin of the 20th and the emotion revolution of the 21st century and it answers so, so many questions I had in my head with a basic grid.

A really good read

This book was a page turner from beginning to end and except for some minor editing issues was perfectly written. The profound pain that these girls experienced left me sometimes on the verge of tears. Then Julia swept you into the next phase a wonderful tale that exhibited how the bonds of love and sisterhood know no bounds, can't wait for the fourth volume. Whatever you do Julia Press Simmons don't ever stop writing!!!!!!!

This was my first time reading Julia Press Simmons work, and it will not be my last. This series was great, it was full of twist and turns that left you sitting on the egde of your seat. If you are looking for a great series this is it.

A decent anthology

With so many anthologies available that are intended to be used in applied ethics courses, choosing the best one for one's class can be overwhelming. About all a reviewer can do to help is to list some of the plusses and minuses of the anthology in question.

Here are some of the reasons to use this book in an applied ethics course:

There are plenty of articles, around 80 in all. For each issue covered there are four or more articles (more typically six or so) representing divergent viewpoints. (The anthology does not show any obvious bias in its selection of articles.)

Each section is preceded by a fairly extensive introduction to the topic written by Sterba. These introductions, which set out the issue clearly and briefly examine the alternatives, provide helpful background to the student.

So, why not an unqualified recommendation? One thing is the choice of topics. While Sterba covers many of the standard issues, such as abortion and euthanasia, affirmative action, and free speech, there is a relative lack of material in the area of bioethics and environmental ethics. For instructors wishing to cover these topics in their course, it is probably best to look for a different anthology.

The other negative is the price. This is definitely a high-end text when it comes to cost. It retails new at nearly $150 dollars. There are other anthologies on the market that are just as good and considerably more reasonable.

Too Much but Not Enough for the Price

A useful if somewhat overwhelmingly comprehensive introductory ethics text. Strong points include a strong focus on libertarianism, useful in the current political climate and inclusion of computer ethics, gay and lesbian rights, and a focus on our global responsibility. The text attempts to include relevant documents such as court decisions, but these seem unhelpful and I probably won't have students read them. The editor also includes a few too many of his own writings which are not by far the strongest entries in the book. Useful as a supplemental text to springboard discussion of current ethical issues, but I wouldn't recommend it for the primary or only text for an introductory undergraduate class.

About the Author

Sally Sedgwick is Professor of Philosophy and Affiliated Professor of Germanic Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1985, and until 2003 was on the faculty at Dartmouth College. She has held visiting positions at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and the universities of Bonn, Bern and Luzern. She has been awarded grants by NEH, ACLS, DAAD, and the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung. Her publications include numerous essays on Kant and Hegel, and the monograph, Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals: An Introduction (2008). She is editor of The Reception of Kant's Critical Philosophy: Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel (2000). In the academic year of 2009-10, she was President of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association.

Very carefully argued

This book is mostly about Hegel's earlier Jena works and the critique Hegel develops there of Kant and also of empiricists such as Locke and Hume. It is a wonderful summary of Kantian metaphysics and Hegel's reaction to it (as it is gleaned from these Jena works). It is a pleasure to read. If I have any complaints, the author purports to rescue Hegel from the criticism that Hegel is a shallow reader of Kant. No names are named. I would be curious to know who would dare to make such a suggestion, since it is very apparent to me that Hegel reads Kant with laser clarity. Also, the Science of Logic does not seem to figure in this book, even though the Science of Logic profoundly interacts with Kant and can even be viewed as a running commentary on Kant. But perhaps that's a separate book project--and a formidable one. Given the book's intended scope, it is a very impressive achievement and a great contribution..
