Excellent reference book

Mildred Johnson does something many, if not most, algebra books fail to do. Give the students not just an explanation of how to solve word problems but she gives the students enough problems of the same kind to practice so they can get the pattern engrained in their mind. I have used her book as a reference for my algebra classes for years and highly recommend it.

Excellent supplement for Algebra Textbooks

As an algebra teacher for 30 years, having taught at the junior high, high school and college levels, I have observed that students struggle with word problems more consistently than any other area. This book is the best source I've seen for alleviating some of the stress and difficulties students have with word problems. It makes an excellent supplement to any elementary or intermediate algebra textbook.

I'm very happy with this book. It does just what it promises: teaches kids how to solve word problems in beginning-level algebra. I wish I'd had a book like this when I was in school. It gives detailed explanations which are easy to understand.

~~Corruption and Greed Equals a Captivating Read~~

This is one intense and captivating read from the first to the last page. It is filled with intrigue plus has the corruption that the cocaine industry has created interwoven into this spell binding novel. Gage Hartline is employed working for a retired CEO of a credit card company. This is a most lucrative position with ample time off. Gage decides to visit his mentor, COL Hunter (now retired) in Fayetteville. Gage wants to run a new employment job by him. And, as expected, the COL doesn't like the portion about 'killing for hire', if necessary. Gage decides to accept the new challenge but something doesn't click about his employer, Falco. What is that old saying about 'trusting your gut'? Off to Lima he goes and he becomes gainfully employed by Alfa Seguridad led by Sonny Calabrese. All of these employees were elite soldiers prior to going to Lima, Peru, to work for Sonny.

This is one roller coaster ride - from the US to Lima and back again - some of the characters create mayhem and havoc; others are trying to take over the cocaine business and some just outright want to kill and kill some more. There is a scene in a garage in SC that I will not forget soon. And, I nearly forgot the dual scene at La Merced.! My word, that is incredible, too. The monetary value of the cocaine when broken down by kilo is mind boggling. When one discovers the people responsible for transporting the coke and the manner in which it is done, one will be completely flabbergasted!

All in all, a well written novel with twists and turns along many of the paths. The characters have a depth to them that is not normally found in a book. Their backgrounds enhance the characters so the reader is able to gain more perspective into their lives than normal. Plot is well conceived, excellent mix of characters and the ending is both surprising and justified.

Soldier of Misfortune is Driskell's Coming of Age

To say that Gage Hartline is drawn to dangerous situations is a bit like saying Bill Clinton enjoys the company of women or Kim Kardashian doesn't mind a little publicity. Like a moth drawn to a flame, Gage simply can't help himself!

When Gage is offered the chance to go undercover in Peru to find out why ex-soldiers working for narco-baron Sonny Calabrese keep turning up dead, his most revered and trusted mentor pleads with him to turn and run the other way. Even Gage knows it is a suicide mission. But Gage Hartline is like a great thoroughbred race horse born to run - he can't change who he is even if it ultimately costs him his life.

One of the best things about Driskell's evolution as a writer is his blossoming ability to seamlessly create breathtaking and harrowing plots while gradually revealing Hartline's admirable yet flawed character. With every book I learn more about what drives this heroic and sometimes tragic man. At first glance, it is tempting to see him as an unrepentant adrenaline addicted mercenary. But he is far more than that. He is, first and foremost, a protector who is guided by a deeply ingrained sense of personal justice that overrides any and all allegiances and relationships. Gage sees this as an almost noble calling and will not allow anything or anyone to interfere with what he believes to be his duty.

The conflicts this creates and his struggles to reconcile duty with the normal personal desires of love, friendship, home, etc... are fascinating to watch evolve.

Soldier of Misfortune allows us to see Gage's continuing evolution as a hero and as a man. It also allows us to see Driskell continue to evolve as a tremendously skilled author. Driskell gets better with each novel and I believe Soldier of Misfortune marks his coming of age as a master of the thriller genre.

Another great covert ops book.

This was #3 in the Gage Hartline series. I had read books 1 and 2, and reviewed both. Like those prior to this book, "...Misfortune" well satisfied my love for covert ops. I like the intrigue laid out by the antagonists, in this case, an American expatriate operating a drug stealing operation against the Peruvian drug cartels. Hartline is sent to Peru to take out the head antagonist. Gage, the head protagonist of the story, equally set his own course of planning in order to carry out his mission. The intrigue by both Gage and the principal antagonist is what brings the story line to a compelling conclusion.
I don't re-tell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say, this covert ops book kept me "hooked" from page one to page last. The plot was well developed. The characters were also well developed. The story flowed continually without any "dead" spots. The book had great thread, by which I mean if/when I put it down and later came back to it, I did not have to re read pages to remember where I had left off. That's a good mark for story line delivery and reader memory.
For anyone interested in reading about the drug cartels and how they carry out their mission, and the covert ops employed to thwart that mission, this is an extremely interesting and enjoyable read.
Apart from this series, I have read other books by Chuck Driskell and enjoyed them as much...but those were reviews from another perspective.
I highly recommend this book and believe any one reading it will agree it was time well spent.

Most in depth

and most true to the Word I have ever read in that I do not believe there is any private interpretation or guessing as there is often with other authors. This book while weighty is very clear and easy to read yet it is somewhat difficult to assimilate fully, I believe it is because of the great scope of the subject and its demands (spiritual as well as mental) on the reader rather than any defect of the author. Well worth the substantial effort to read.

A good comprehensive review of the Russian language.

Written in 1962, this Harper Perennial has stood the test of time. Almost forty years later it's still one of the best beginners guides around. It gives you a beginning vocabulary of 4000 of the most used Russian words, a decent overview of all the grammar rules and readings based on the previous lessons.
The authors give good, matter of fact advice on grammar rules and word memorization. More than any other comparable guide, it delves into vocabulary, grammar, and reading assignments. Although it's a "beginners guide", beginners will need some Russian language tapes to get a real feel for the language. That said, I'd especially recommend Russian for Beginners for those in need of a refresher (like myself).
The only down side is the format of the book. There are only two chapter headings, and the forty-two lessons seem to run on into each other, making it difficult to find anything easily by just flipping back through the pages. Be that as it may, I highly recommend this book, especially if you once had some knowledge of Russian and are looking for a comprehensive refresher. I give it five stars because it is the best of the half dozen books on the subject I've seen.

Great first Russian book

This was my first book on Russian almost 20 years ago and I was quite fond of it. Despite being over 40 years old, having been first published in 1962, this book by Duff and Makarov is still one of the best beginner's courses in Russian out there, and I was pleased to see it had been brought out in a new edition by Harper Resource.
Although it purports to be a simple course, there is a lot of meat here, and each page is packed with information. There are numerous exercies, grammar drills, and detailed explanations of the grammar and syntax in each chapter. There are lots of vocabulary lists, and over 40 lessons. The author includes entertaining passages from Russian folk tales for reading and translation, such as "The Fox and the Scorpion," and also passages from famous Russian authors where the level of difficulty isn't too great. The book imparts a vocabulary of 4000 words and there is a dictionary in the back with all the words in case you need to look them up.
The author has very clear discussions of the complex Russian case and verb system, especially things like the Russian verb of motion, which is different from English and most Indo-European languages, along with many other aspects of the grammar. Russian has at four different conjugations patterns for verbs, which are inflected for person, number, and gender, as well as six grammatical cases, similar to Latin, but Duff and Makarov have very clear and concise explanations of everything which are a joy to read.
I spent a summer working through this book and then took a college-level Russian class the following fall semester, and I was way ahead of the rest of the class as a result. I'd learned the Cyrillic alphabet and could read and understand basic Russian sentences and paragraphs and much of the grammar. In fact, I'd gone most of the way through the first semester of Russian by just getting about 2/3 of the way through this book on my own. All in all, this is still a great book and now stands as a classic in its field which has rarely been surpassed.

actually i give this 4.75 stars

This book is great... it tells you EVERYTHING. The author sets up the lessons in such a way that is suitable to the beginner. You build upon the previous lesson until you have a thorough working knowledge of the whole language. For the first two weeks, I spend more time reading the pronounciation guide in the front and learning the alphabet. I highly recommend using tapes. the only reason why it doesnt get 5 stars is the lack of exercises. the book contains reading selections at the end of each chapter but no real exercises.

Jeffrey Stoodt text is a easy reader for the young and eager to learn. The story has been modernize to give an up to date edge for the young reader. The illustrations through wash out give the authenticity of southwest flavor such as old blue paint on a Santa Fe door. Emersons non-threating snake gives the young viewer a smile.
