Great series, with one major caveat

Fuuka is one of my two favorite ongoing manga available on CrunchyRoll (I've read the entire series over there, and am buying them as they come down in price here on Amazon to support the author and for the minor extras you get in the graphic novels). The art is clean and lovely, the story fantastic and compelling (the author is going to blindside you in chapter 36--volume 4--so consider yourself warned!), and the characters quite enjoyable and capable of growth/change.

However, there is one thing marring the series for me, and that is the persistent fan service (of the sexy poses variety) and minor harem aspects of the series, both of which are minor at the start of the series, but grow increasingly pervasive and annoying as things go on (the chapter that came out the week before I published this review is a good example: the final page has a completely unnecessary nude shot of one of the band members in the shower. Why? No clue, because she's not thinking anything, none of the other characters are talking about her, and the conversation that is going on has nothing to do with bathing. The author simply had an extra panel and thought, "Hey, let's have a nude bathing shot!" Because Japan). I still read each new chapter every week and love the story, but I'm increasingly starting to feel that I might be one of those people who "reads Playboy for the articles".

All that said, I still highly recommend the first 8 volumes despite the fan service (chapter 75 offers closure to the unexpected twist in chapter 36, and falls right at the end of volume 8; if you're going to buy the series at all, you absolutely need to commit to the first 8 volumes). It truly is a great story, and if needlessly large/perky breasts and panty shots make you happier than they do me, you'll like it even more.

Fair warning: unless you like people watching you cry, though, I don't recommend reading volumes 4, 5, or 8 in public. I've read the first 8 volumes three times (twice on CrunchyRoll, once on Kindle), and cried like a baby every time.

Free web-based computational tools were not available when I was a bench scientist. I used proprietary software, such as the Wisconsin package for sequence formatting, editing, mapping, alignment and comparative analyses of cDNA and protein sequences. New and better bioinformatics tools are now available for public use since the sequencing of the human genome. Examples and instructions on how to use these tools are included in the book.

However, the book is not only about free tools and databases, and how to use them. The contents of the book are organized into sections that include background information about genes and genomes, molecular evolution and genomic technologies. These sections are well written and are easy to read and understand since terms have been defined well and concepts are explained in plain language. I particularly enjoyed reading the molecular evolution section, as this field appears to be the main beneficiary of the advances made in sequencing of the genome of various species. The book makes references to the history of a topic under discussion, including sometimes on how the algorithms were developed. By doing so, the author fosters an interest in the subject and lays the ground for further discussion of the topic. Original and discerning illustrations are the other features of the book that a reader would appreciate.

Moreover, the contents of the book and presentations have benefited from the author‘s background in academia, research and regulatory experiences. I believe the book would be appropriate for a wider audience, and would have relevance to students, professionals and the curious public (The Angelina Jolie’s) that would like to learn about the advances in molecular evolution and medicine in this age of genomic revolution.

In terms of the online references in the book, I sometimes encountered changes in the user interface that made using the screenshots and step by step instructions in the book impracticable. An updatable website maintained by the publisher could accompany the book to solve these issues.

I guess I am spoiled by some of the wonderful textbooks that I've purchased on Kindle where everything (illustrations

This book is not coherently written, and one can see this immediately in the first chapter (Section 1.2, for example) where the author states that DNA is the universal genetic material. The subsequent paragraphs meander off-topic and discuss RNA viruses. This happens again and again throughout.
Also, editing for the Kindle book is haphazard and distracting. Many pictures are simply too small to see. Tables are not formatted well. I guess I am spoiled by some of the wonderful textbooks that I've purchased on Kindle where everything (illustrations, tables, narrative) fit perfectly.

About the Author

Jo-Ann Shelton is Professor of Classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is the author of several books and articles on the social and cultural history of Rome in the early imperial period, including Hercules Furens: The Madness of Hercules (1991).

Valuable collection of primary sources

This book was required reading for a Roman Civilization class, but we only read a few selections from it as supplementary evidence for other things we were studying, but since graduation I’ve had the opportunity to read it cover-to-cover and am surprised to find what enjoyable reading the book is on its own. Basically the book is a collection of excerpts from primary sources. In addition to the selections from contemporary writers, the author also includes inscriptions from gravestones and architectural monuments, graffiti, and personal correspondence of ordinary people. Some of the excerpts are funny, but a number of them are surprisingly moving and very disturbing, such as the letter from a soldier on the frontier to his pregnant wife at home. He writes that if she has a boy that she should keep it, but if it is a girl that she should expose it. The reader gets a really good idea of how the Romans thought and what their values were from their own words. The author has provided extensive footnotes, serviceable maps, and a comprehensive bibliography. This book, in tandem with Charles Boren’s ROMAN SOCIETY, provides an excellent foundation for further studies in the culture of Ancient Rome. Highly recommended! Five Stars!

An excellent resource for any student learning about the Romans, their customs, as well as history-- with primary quotations and passages attached to every topic covered in this book. I have used this book for numerous courses as well as some major research papers and it has proven its worth! From women, children, slaves, abortion, military, the power of the man in every familial unit, satire, etc- this book covers everything. I highly encourage students to purchase this book.

This was broken down into topics and further broken down into very specific sections on various aspects of Roman life. Some of the information was interesting and engaging, but others were not. Romans aren't really my thing, but if you love those wacky Romans, this might be a good supplemental book.

For USMC-WW1, a must-read

COL Owen(USMC)'s latest effort is a must read for all those interested in the United States in World War I particularly the US Marine Corps readers.

Expanding on his excellent work annotating a previous Marine Corps WW1 effort published by Texas A&M University Press, COL Owen's smooth writing style combined with exhaustive primary and secondary documentation research, makes for an "easy" read detailing the 2nd Battalion's grim and bloody campaigns during WW1 as part of one of the Marine Brigades attached to the U.S. Army's 2nd U.S. Infantry Division 'Indianheads" .."2nd to None!" The officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men of the 2nd Battalion fought in most of the major battles of the last year of the war and its casualty rosters reflect the butcher's toll. Many of the veterans of these battles played major roles in future Marine Corps efforts in Nicauragua(sp?), Haiti, World War 2 storming the beaches of the South Pacific and the Korean War.

The book contains the all-important maps for military history, an extensive bibliography/associated footnotes, and index as well as photographs.

A highly recommended effort worth adding to one's WW1 library and USMC histories.

Excellent book that translates to today!

LtCol Peter Owen's book is a must for your PME collection as well as for anyone who likes to read about units of the Great War. Owen's book focuses on the 2/6 Marines which was part of the AEF's 2nd Division during WWI. Owen brilliantly tells the story about how the unit was a mixture of career Marines and men who joined up after the US declared war in 1917. Along with describing the personalities of the 2/6, Owen focuses on the operational effectiveness of the unit from its inception and how loses in combat negatively effected the performance of the unit. Owen also shows how the lack of training and poor doctrine was coupled with poor leadership decisions that led to very costly battles for the battalion. The book is easy to read and the chapters are well structured so the reader clearly understands the story Owen is relating to them. I plan to give this book to my friend who is going to USMC Command and Staff college!

An exceptional job by Lieutenant Colonel Pete Owen on his research and writing by masterfully piecing together first hand accounts of the Marines of all ranks that fought at Belleau Wood and Soissons. A well organized, simple read - but one that provides any military leader many lessons learned that can be applied to today's global war on terror and the battlefields of Iraq. Any reader who enjoys historical or military writing will enjoy and learn something from this book. LtCol Pete Owen provides interesting facts and military traditions of that era that are probably not known by many current military personnel. This book makes the perfect gift for any newly promoted NCO or recent academy school graduate and has become a definite addition to my PME library. Highly recommended and congratulations to LtCol Pete Owen on a job well done. Semper Fi Mac.

I love this book and use it all the time

I love this book. I have started collecting the "proper" glasses for the different types of beer. it's fun to have company come over and serve beer in different glasses and have a little knowledge of why I'm serving it the glass.

Mildly informative; poorly written

Well, if we are going off just the pictures, then this book gets a positive review from me. Unfortunately I actually wanted to read the book. I have my doubts that the author of the book is either a writer or a knowledgeable beer enthusiast. In fact, at one point he states that the information about glasses was obtained from his own online research and by talking to people at the beer store he frequents. Good grief.

To add insult to injury, he is a terrible writer and sometimes crafts (no pun intended) sentences that make absolutely no sense. Here is an actual sentence from this book: "Craft beers have had their ups and downs over the past 20 years or so, but it is apparent that it is going nowhere but up lately with the diversity of types of beers and sales are constantly growing." Uh... What? Maybe the proofreader had a few too many craft beers and didn't catch that one. The worst part about the book is how a lot of the information is presented like it's a Power Point slide show for a college assignment. Occasionally facts will be given but he won't elaborate on them or explain them so I'm left clueless about WHY bock beers helped skirt around the fasting rules of Lent. Damned if he's gonna explain it to me.

All in all, there's probably something useful in this book for you, whether it be the pretty pictures or the suggestion of what style glass to use for your beers. But if you're hoping to become a beer genius when you're done reading it, then I hate to break it to you but you're going to need to consult Wikipedia to fill in the gaps.

What fun to have the book to go with the glasses I had bought my husband for Father's Day. We use one of more of the glasses every night and are now having fun reading about the glass we chose for the beer we were having with dinner. Great set! Those Christmas gift ideas are a-churning!!

Laz Churchyard meets Hunter S. Thompson and Duke

Ye gods, such an incredible combination...
*Transmetropolitan* is quite obviously Ellis' platform for ranting frantically about what he feels is wrong with the world (real, imagined, and otherwise).
For those of you who are Ellis fanatics, the story falls in the not-too-near future in the world that exists around the time that Lazarus Churchyard was busy being a terrorist.
"Year of the Bastard" is something of a homage to Hunter S. Thompson's "Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72."
In other words, this is DEFINITELY NOT a comic book for your average child or teen. Ellis makes no pretense in writing for an adult audience.
Mixed in with the off-color jokes and futuristic musings are meditations, of a sort, on what's wrong with the world - gerrymandering all the poor people into a single community with cheap housing, traitorous political tradeoffs that sell out all the principles that the platform supposedly stands on, and the futility of voting between two evils, to name a few. Can't happen? Try urban housing projects in 50's and 60's, Clinton's presidency, and the current presidential election (robotic liar who sold out to the Chinese and writes extremely bad environmental legislation vs. inexperienced governer with a bad pollution record and not a strong grasp on all the issues).
Too bad we're not all as outspoken as Spider Jerusalem, the beloved outlaw journalist who needs to be in the City he hates and to be hated himself to write well.
It's a great read, folks. I'd suggest you pick it up after watching a couple campaign adds and feeling your brain mush into gel from all the bull that you're being fed.
I'm going to end this with something beautiful:
A bald man with a spider tattooed on his forehead has just injected a stimulant into his tear duct. He is bleeding slightly from that eye and from the opposite nostril. His eyes are bugging out, he is sweating profusely, he has tobacco smoke exiting his orifices, and he has a death-head's grin playing on his features.
Why is this beautiful (btw, I'm not condoning drug use)? Because this is the picture of a man who is about to do something vital, something terribly necessary, something that shows that he is a passionate and dedicated person. He is ALIVE.
An image of Spider Jerusalem, ladies and gentlemen. Now buy the bloody book or I'll have to lob steaming moose entrails into the nearest crowded playground.

Covering the campaign

8 years ago, Spider saw the Beast come into power. After that, he went to his mountain. But he was called back, and in Lust for Life, wrapped his fingers around the pulse of the city. Now, it's election time again, and his editor has spoken. Spider will cover the election, since his readers demand it. Not a threat, but advice for someone who wants to make money for himself and Spider.
You might think that a comic book is for teenagers. Maybe even younger. Some might be. This is not one of them. Spider is a drug crazed maniac. But he's not the worst of the lot.
The politicians are. Heller, with his "America for Americans" catchphrase, and a Hitler lookalike in the crowd - in case you missed the point with the Gothic lettering of his name and having his rallies compared to Nuremberg, it's driven home is a rather unsubtle manner.
The Smiler is just plain deranged. It's not clear if politicians look like that before they've been prepared by their handlers, but the scary thing is I don't find it implausible.
Vita is an interesting character, a nice addition to the cast of maniacs that populate this world. The story line flows well, and demands several re-readings to see all the details that the first reading misses.
The artwork in this novel is simply at its best. Yelena is a character that Darick Robertson is meant to draw, and he does the things he does well, well here. No experimentation, no compromises.
This is easily the best of the series, and makes "The New Scum" all the more disappointing as a follow-up.
Absolute must read.

American Politics Meets Its Match

Here in Volume Three, Spider Jerusalem finds his life once again driven further into madness by the demands of his Editor. Spider has been back into the city for a while, and except for a short but memorable run-in with The Beast, he's failed to address a seemingly unavoidable topic of the news (by choice of course): politics.

It's an election year, and his hated enemy, The Beast, on whose depravity Spider literally wrote the book (the same book which made his career, and drove him out of civilization entirely), is seeking reelection. The Opposition party is in town, and Spider is being dragged kicking and screaming into discussing their imminent convention. Unfortunately for Spider, the front-runner in that race is a neo-fascistic nutjob, and his adversary is a man who only seems to do one thing: smile dementedly.

Can Spider save the American Electorate? Can he pry himself away from the needles, pipes, and pills long enough to find The Truth?

Definitely not a 5 star book !

If the goal is to learn new repair, installation, improving and troubleshooting techniques, I do not recommend this book. It will indicate what to look for, but as far as approaching and correcting equipment deficiencies, it's extremely limited !
