Most in depth

and most true to the Word I have ever read in that I do not believe there is any private interpretation or guessing as there is often with other authors. This book while weighty is very clear and easy to read yet it is somewhat difficult to assimilate fully, I believe it is because of the great scope of the subject and its demands (spiritual as well as mental) on the reader rather than any defect of the author. Well worth the substantial effort to read.

A good comprehensive review of the Russian language.

Written in 1962, this Harper Perennial has stood the test of time. Almost forty years later it's still one of the best beginners guides around. It gives you a beginning vocabulary of 4000 of the most used Russian words, a decent overview of all the grammar rules and readings based on the previous lessons.
The authors give good, matter of fact advice on grammar rules and word memorization. More than any other comparable guide, it delves into vocabulary, grammar, and reading assignments. Although it's a "beginners guide", beginners will need some Russian language tapes to get a real feel for the language. That said, I'd especially recommend Russian for Beginners for those in need of a refresher (like myself).
The only down side is the format of the book. There are only two chapter headings, and the forty-two lessons seem to run on into each other, making it difficult to find anything easily by just flipping back through the pages. Be that as it may, I highly recommend this book, especially if you once had some knowledge of Russian and are looking for a comprehensive refresher. I give it five stars because it is the best of the half dozen books on the subject I've seen.

Great first Russian book

This was my first book on Russian almost 20 years ago and I was quite fond of it. Despite being over 40 years old, having been first published in 1962, this book by Duff and Makarov is still one of the best beginner's courses in Russian out there, and I was pleased to see it had been brought out in a new edition by Harper Resource.
Although it purports to be a simple course, there is a lot of meat here, and each page is packed with information. There are numerous exercies, grammar drills, and detailed explanations of the grammar and syntax in each chapter. There are lots of vocabulary lists, and over 40 lessons. The author includes entertaining passages from Russian folk tales for reading and translation, such as "The Fox and the Scorpion," and also passages from famous Russian authors where the level of difficulty isn't too great. The book imparts a vocabulary of 4000 words and there is a dictionary in the back with all the words in case you need to look them up.
The author has very clear discussions of the complex Russian case and verb system, especially things like the Russian verb of motion, which is different from English and most Indo-European languages, along with many other aspects of the grammar. Russian has at four different conjugations patterns for verbs, which are inflected for person, number, and gender, as well as six grammatical cases, similar to Latin, but Duff and Makarov have very clear and concise explanations of everything which are a joy to read.
I spent a summer working through this book and then took a college-level Russian class the following fall semester, and I was way ahead of the rest of the class as a result. I'd learned the Cyrillic alphabet and could read and understand basic Russian sentences and paragraphs and much of the grammar. In fact, I'd gone most of the way through the first semester of Russian by just getting about 2/3 of the way through this book on my own. All in all, this is still a great book and now stands as a classic in its field which has rarely been surpassed.

actually i give this 4.75 stars

This book is great... it tells you EVERYTHING. The author sets up the lessons in such a way that is suitable to the beginner. You build upon the previous lesson until you have a thorough working knowledge of the whole language. For the first two weeks, I spend more time reading the pronounciation guide in the front and learning the alphabet. I highly recommend using tapes. the only reason why it doesnt get 5 stars is the lack of exercises. the book contains reading selections at the end of each chapter but no real exercises.

Marguerite Davol's How Snake Got His Hiss (Orchard, 1996) is a strong, bright original tale that is exciting to read aloud and alone. With the number of high-quality folktale retellings published today, this one is expendable.

Easy Reading

Jeffrey Stoodt text is a easy reader for the young and eager to learn. The story has been modernize to give an up to date edge for the young reader. The illustrations through wash out give the authenticity of southwest flavor such as old blue paint on a Santa Fe door. Emersons non-threating snake gives the young viewer a smile.

'Maelstrom' by Jordan Hawk begins with Whyborne in the library, presenting a brief summary of past events in his endearing, cross way, bemoaning the fact that with those endeavors his anonymity he had so long nurtured is now gone forever. Whyborne is with other dignitaries at a presentation to accept a large donation of rare books. Although it's not in Whyborne's job description, he's asked to help sort through the books in order to pluck out the potentially dangerous arcane ones for fear of having entities such as the ones they encountered in Egypt appear in Widdershins.

At the presentation, Whyborne is accidentally, on purpose, doused with a glass of champagne by Dr. Bradley, a colleague and nemesis of his. Fueled by jealousy, he constantly torments Whyborne with his insinuations concerning his relationship with Griffin. Just as Bradley is issuing his latest barb, Griffin appears behind Dr. Bradley, startling him, Whyborne couldn't be more relieved to see him. Griffin 'rescues' Whyborne and whisks him away, ostentatiously to help Whyborne dry his shirt. In truth Griffin is “uncomfortably” attracted to the sight of Whyborne being aloof and collected with his colleagues, when he knows under that fine veneer of pretentious indifference, there is a fire just waiting to be stoked and simply can't wait to be burned. When they get to Whyborne's office, that's exactly what happens.

In his examination of the newly-acquired books, there is one of particular interest, the Wisborg Codex, with writing even Whyborne can't decipher. The Wisborg Codex becomes the central point of a series of events involving obtaining the tome, including theft, ritualistic murder, animal familiars, and other nefarious events. The closer they come to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes for them all, particularly Whyborne, who is very nearly loses himself forever. Fortunately Griffin's undying love, trust, and belief in Whyborne put him in a position to right a horrible wrong, and once again, in a position to save Widdershins.

This story is beyond exciting and intense with several imaginative twists and turns that seriously surprised me. As with her other books in the series, Jordan's story-telling ability continues to awe me. Her ability to create solutions to seemingly unsolvable issues is impressive. There are several story lines that I cannot all explore here, but trust me when I say Jordan has outdone herself. From the humor involved in Whyborne's reaction to Griffin's new automobile and his real fear that Griffin is going to kill them all with his reckless driving; to the moving example of Griffin's love for Whyborne, believing him against all odds, it's a book Whyborne and Griffin fans will absolutely love. For those new to the series, you are missing an exceptional reading adventure and I suggest starting at the first book in the series, 'Widdershins', and join those who already know and love these two exceptional men and their whacky, sometimes frightening world. Thank you, so much, Jordan, for another awesome reading experience with my favorite guys, Whyborne and Griffin. I'm looking forward to the next story. Originally reviewed at Rainbow Book Reviews.

These Whyborne & Griffin books just seem to keep getting better and better!

I have a few authors who I consider my very favorite ones to read, and I never miss one of their books. Jordan L. Hawk is one of them. I get giddy fanboy whenever I see she has a new one coming out. I was literally doing the happy dance the other day when Dani sent me over this advanced copy for review!

This morning I finally had time to sit down and start reading. Not surprisingly, at the time I’m writing this review, I just finished turning the last page. No breaks. I never even stopped to make COFFEE this morning! You owe me coffee Ms. Hawk!

I’m really loving this latest installment in the Whyborne & Griffin books. I particularly enjoyed that it was set back in the town of Widdershins, as a nice change from the guys’ globe-trotting in the last few books. Evil has once again come to Widdershins, Massachusetts. And of course Whyborne and Griffin are both right in the middle of it!

This time we have something odd going on. Things have disappeared from the museum that no one should even have knowledge of…unless they work for the museum? People are wandering around with their recent memories wiped. And now someone is killing people and ripping out their hearts…the human sacrifice bodies are starting to pile up!

Who is behind this latest evil incursion? I’ll be honest, I guessed part way through the book and felt totally full of my bad self / sleuth skills when I was correct!

This may be one of my favorites of the series so far. I love how Jordan is keeping up with technology as the story progresses. I, of course, had to Google the 1901 Oldsmobile Curved Dash automobile! Adding it, and the newly available telephone, made the story more real world and reminded me of things we take for granted that weren’t common in that day and age. I really like Whyborne’s resistance to change as well.

My final comment on the storyline…I might be imagining it, but readers…let me know what you think after you read it. I’m thinking that I’m picking up something developing between a certain fairly shy museum secretary, who has a penchant for puce scarves…and Whyborne’s sister Persephone??? I, for one, am hoping so. Poor Miss Parkhurst deserves some love too! Lord knows, she isn’t ever going to get it from chasing Whyborne around!

I recommend this book. It is obvious there is more to come…and I can’t wait! If you haven’t read the entire series, get to it…now! If you’ve been reading them as eagerly as I have, hit one click and buy this latest installment today. You can thank me for the advice later. :-)

NUMBER 7 A WINNER!!!!

Jordan L. Hawk has been entertaining readers with her Wyborne and Griffin Series and at Maelstrom book 7 ; she still has me reeling. Our main characters have expanded from the meeting of Percival Endicott Wybornne and Griffin Flaherty. These two have had some harrowung excapades in this series, yet the spark and lve has grown stronger and stronger. During which they have secretly wedded before God and friends. They have been through very intense death defying events and we now open their newest adventure.

Wybornes’s best friend Christine and her fiancé Iskander have been invited by his father Niles to have their wedding at Whyborne House. Percival is suspicious by a number of things his father has done lately with such generosity even giving Griffin stock. Things start happening by a disappearance of a map, a murder, a disappearance of a codex, another murder.....Meanwhile Griffin has also been hired and in the end they all wind up with all roads leading to the same mystery and all of them racing to save the Ladysmith Museum, the town of Widdershins along with Percival and Griffin, and Christine and Iksander! Wow leaves me breathless !!!

I loved seeing Whyborne’s sister Persephone involved in the wedding plans. I loved finally seeing Nile’s Whyborne see his son. The story was another great addition to this series. I not only love the adventure, the action, the majcik but the sexy hidden love between Ival and Griffin. This is a wonderful series not to be missed,,,,

Not well presented at all!

I usually don't write reviews but I had to for this book. It is a hodge podge of various sources and incredibly dense (not in a good way). It is very one sided and does not cover any of the nuances of the era and poetry and neither does it present much in terms of linking claims with sources.

I could not go through more than a quarter of the way before i gave up!

PHRASES ARE mixed up with other. It is realy the history of Arab poetry and culture with more emphasis on the pre Islamic era. The writer is more interested in showing his knowledge of Arabic and the depth of it, than the real subject. Difficult to read as the English used is very old. The book is written in the early 20the century.

A Wonderful Read

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the love and friendship between the two main characters. We meet them when they are 5 years old. And we follow their journey as they grow up. I felt like I got to know Aahan and Kavya very well. And their families to. The way Aahan loved Kavya was truly amazing. When you get to the part in the book when Kavya goes through the awful rape it rips your heart out. It is also heartbreaking how women are treated in India after they are raped. The book also takes you into some India culture that was very interesting. This book was one of the best books I have read in along time. I liked the way it was written . You really have a feel for the characters in the book. Especially after Kavya tries to deal with the aftermath of what happened to her. I hope more people become aware of this book. It deserves to be on the Bestsellers list. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down.

love, and murder

In this chilling duet ("Rumors" book 1) by A. C. Arthur, the suspense is riveting, as the mystery unfolds to the shocking conclusion. Combined with utter betrayal, deceit, love, and murder, this is one thriller that will be impossible to put down...........After reuniting with the love of his life, Tenile Barnes, Dr. Nathan "Nate" Hamilton was not only happy with his current situation, but he was also worried sick. There was a killer on the loose, and one of their best friend's was missing. Was she kidnapped by the killer? Or did she just run off somewhere? Nate had no proof about the girl's whereabouts, but the fact was, there was a killer on the loose and he just struck again! Who would want to kill Donovan Connor? And why? He needed answers and he needed them now. After returning to town ten years later, he knew how it felt to be falsely accused, as he thought back to that horrible night so long ago. He also held a dark secret close to his heart, with the memory still fresh in his mind, making an oath to someone, and at the same time, promising never to divulge that secret. that could supply him with an alibi for that particular night. Even knowing this was book #2, I had to read it from the synopsis alone. And while there were instances in this book where I kind of felt as though I had missed out by not reading the first one, it wasn't bad enough that I couldn't follow the current story-line.

And what I found? Honestly I didn't really like.

To begin with, it seemed as though the author could never keep the time-line straight. One minute it had been weeks since the memorial, weeks since Tenile found Nicole in bed with her fiance. Then it turned into months. By the end of the story, it was revealed that Landy had been dead for 10 years. Which left me wondering - which was it? If Landy had been dead for 10 years, why did everyone come home for the memorial that took place only weeks ago? At first I thought maybe the characters just moved on fast from partner to partner - but the more I read this story the more confused I became. Just how long had it been since one character had been with another?

And speaking of the characters... what an incestuous little bunch they had been. I don't mean that in the literal sense - but rather in the sense that apparently at one point one of the male characters had been dating Landy - and cheating on her - and then mere weeks, months, whatever later he was engaged to another of the group - whilst cheating on her. It seemed as though these characters that were supposedly "friends" changed partners an awful not. Even if the story had taken place over the supposed ten years - I still found it weird and odd that instead of finding someone new, they just went on to the next "friend".

Aside from that I found the story to be very anti-climatic even though it had the potential to be great. Without giving away any spoilers I can say this: there was a great build up to a certain scene - and then when the story continued after that, I, as a reader, had to wonder why. And then the truth came out, but yet the story still continued. Instead of giving closure, it just felt as though the story was being dragged on for a higher word count.

In the end, I was highly disappointed by this one. The author showed great promise, but the story just didn't deliver.

Enjoyed it!

A view months ago I read the first book in the Rumors series for the blog tour I was participating in. I really enjoyed that book so when I was approached with the question if I wanted to read the second book in the Rumors series called ‘Revealed’, I agreed immediately. This week I finally found the time to read it, and I was super curious how this book would go. ‘Rumors’ really left me with a lot of questions (not a bad thing), and I was ready to find out more.

The first thing that comes to my mind after reading ‘Revealed’ is that A.C. Arthur has a very interesting writing style. It’s easy to read, almost like someone is talking to you instead of that you’re reading the pages of a book. It’s also very descriptive.
The Rumors series had multiple main characters and there all very different. Throughout this book we read the point of views, of at least six of those characters. Most times if an author choices to write from so many point of views, I find myself mixing characters around and forgetting who was exactly who.. In this series that’s not the case. I still find myself connecting to the characters and I can easily remember which character witnessed what.

The mystery in this book definitely keeps you hooked to the pages. In the first book, we thought we knew who killed Landy Connor. But at the end the suspect, Donovan, was murdered and it became clear that he wasn’t the murderer. In this book we find a new suspect and it was interesting to see how that developed. In the end, I really didn’t expect this book to end the way it did. It was good but it was also a little strange since I did not see this coming at all. It made me want to reread the first book to see if could decipher some clues.

The one problem I had with this book were that I think the two main male characters Nathan and Justin were just a little to.. sweet. There love declarations just seemed a little over the top at times. And the reactions they got from the woman.. “Tenile dropped the flowers and pressed two palms over her mouth”. It just sounded a little to cliché’s to me at times. A little too much.

But overall I did enjoy this book. It was a nice and interesting read that made me want to keep reading until I finally knew who was the real murderer.
