Well-written and informative

This book delivers what it says. The reader needs a basic understanding of thermodynamics, but the early chapters walk you gently through the basic theory of heat engines just in case. The rest of the text is readable and (if you like that sort of thing) interesting. The text is not purely theoretical but digresses into practical considerations and dissects one or two real products. Many different physically-realisable configurations are discussed, and a few others you probably wouldn't bother with.

I was slightly disappointed by the fact that the book does not analyse in more detail the benefits and drawbacks of alternative working fluids. The book focuses mainly on ammonia/water and water/lithium bromide, as used in more-or-less every commercial product, but it would have been nice to see at least an acknowledgement of recent research on more esoteric choices.

I too was a bit huffy when the software that was described as being the most awesomely awesome equation solver ever made ever was mentioned right in the introduction. Then a thought occurred- in this day of post-AOL coasters, software is... well, soft. And downloadable. So there you go engineering fellows and fellettes. Equate with abandon...

The book is really good, all the information is helpfull with the absorption systems, but it does not come to the software!!!!!

AMAZING

i DON'T KNOW IF THE TIME WAS RIGHT, IF IT WAS DIVINE INTERVENTION, OR IF IT WAS THE BOOK, BUT I AM ONLY HALF-WAY THROUGH AND HAVE NOT HAD A CIGARETTE IN OVER FOUR WEEKS. I NEVER THOUGHT I COULD QUIT, BUT I APPARENTLY HAVE AND WITH INCREDIBLE EASE. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Smoke-Free 3 years, 2 months and 25 days

This book saved my life. Yeah that was a bit of a dramatic statement but it did. I was a chain-smoker, I smoked close to two packs a day since I was 14 years old. I was addicted since the first time I inhaled. I used this book along with Wellbutrin. When I would get cravings, I'd go back to reading the book.

I do want to warn people who are quitting smoking that you may unleash a depression that you didn't know you had. Smoking cigarettes is a sort of anti-depressant (It's been proven) and I had serious depression when I quit. I was determined not to go back so I went into counseling, started eating better and stayed on the Wellbutrin for a year (it's also an anti depressant). I also started journaling. The thing is that I could have easily gone back to smoking but that would just mean I wasn't facing my problems. Since I've stopped my chronic bronchitis is gone, my allergies are less severe, I have more energy and no, I did not gain any weight (actually lost some while taking Wellbutrin).

This was just my experience. Everyone is different and you may not even experience depression. It will take effort and you need to be prepared and ready. I read the book for a few months before I actually made an attempt to stop.

Excellent book giving a clear recipe for stopping smoking

To successfully stop smoking you need to do 2 things: beat your addiction to nicotine and break your smoking habits. (quitting smoking is about skills not willpower - if you had willpower, would you be smoking?). Quitting Smoking for Dummies shows you how to do both. Brizer reviews the medicines out there that can help you quit, so you can select what is best for you. He then goes through how to break your smoking habit, how to select a support group if you need one, and how to stay clean (prevent the relapse). The book is well written, engaging, and the clever/witty in the usual Dummies way. The book is comprehensive -- now this is a requirement I guess for a mainstream/book-for-everyone, but it is too long for the average smoker? For example, are you pregnant? Do you chew? Etc. If not, don't read those sections. I would recommend reading over the Table of Contents and finding the information you need to help you quit. In short, this book is well written, correct, and comprehensive information. Good luck.

Since childhood, Ann Castro has been surrounded by birds and other animals. Both parents being medical doctors her father a psychiatrist and neurologist, her mother a general practitioner who also bred budgeriars Ann was introduced to behavioural, as well as medical topics at an early age. The author has been involved with parrots for many years. She teaches clicker training for birds and gives advice to parrots owners regarding all issues related to their pets. Ann Castro is a certified parrot behavior consultant and accredited member of the IAABC. Her area of specialization is the resocialization of birds with behavioral issues. In 2003, Ann Castro founded a not-for-profit organization, the AdlA Papageienhilfe gGmbH. AdlA stands for Amigos de las Aves which means friends of the birds . Papageienhilfe is the German word for parrot aid. The aim of the AdlA Papageienhilfe is to improve the relationships and understanding between birds and owners and thus minimizing the number of birds losing their homes. Ann Castro's advice is sought by pet owners, veterinaries and pet shops alike. She has also appeared in various TV shows as a parrot expert. Ann Castro, a born Canadian who currently lives in Germany, holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Masters degree in Business Administration from York University, Canada.

Fun for Parakeet owners, a Must for Parrot owners!

I have seen clicker training with dogs, monkeys and even rabbits. But I was skeptical that a small bird could actually be trained. I was wrong! My two budgies are completely different in personality, and clicker training works for both. Schnappi caught on very fast. She learnt to follow the target stick right away und does tricks now, like riding her own little skateboard.

My second bird Snoopy spent time outside before I got her and is afraid of her own shadow. With clicker training she started enjoying life again. She learnt fast what the "click" means and has fewer panic attacks. Soon, she'll be ready for the target stick. Now I can actually "do something" with my birds rather than just talk to them.

The step-by-step instructions in "The Bird School" by Ann Castro are very easy to follow, and the pictures are worth "a thousand words." To my surprise the book came with a clicker and a target stick!

But reading the book also brought back sad memories. Years ago, I had a friend who always showed up with bite marks on her arms, inflicted by her own parrot. I found the explanation in the "Bird School": The bird was lonely and bored. The punishment for biting (screaming and yelling) was his reward, and that's why it never stopped. I wish a book like this had been available then!

Clicker training is a fun activity for budgies and other small birds. For parrots, clicker training is even more important to socialize them and make life enjoyable for birds and owners alike.

Clear and detailed advice on how to train your birds

I've been dismayed when I've looked at other parrot training books. Many of them describe parrot behavior as attempts to dominate their human. If you read science about birds, they aren't pack animals who try to dominate you. Many of their behaviors come from the fact that they are prey, not predators, and need to learn to feel safe and take time to build trust with their human. Many of their problem behaviors come from fear and stress. This book is extremely thorough and describes how to train your bird using reinforcing behavioral techniques. It breaks down how to train your bird different tricks and behaviors while building trust between you. I have an African Grey and he's my first bird. I got this book because he hasn't built enough trust to step up and he likes to bite or pretend to bite me for fun. Based on the progress we've made already, I feel confident that my bird will be able to step up and will stop biting me if I continue to use the training methods in this book. Parrots are so smart, I'm happy I can work with him in a way that keeps him from being bored and getting destructive. All of the training steps are broken down into small parts and are described in detail so that you can easily follow them. Challenges and mishaps are also described, so if you are having trouble with your bird you can learn how to fix it. I'd say this is the best most thorough book for bird training and I'm really pleased I bought it. I'm even more pleased when I see my bird learning new skills.

A Must Read for all Bird owners!!

This book is a must read for all bird owners; of any kind. It is very informative and beautifully written. It will guide anyone to the clicker way of training. I suggest it for anyone with parrots. After my first session with my bird it was working great! At last, something to read, something to do for your bird/parrot that really works.

About the Author
Neil V. Watson and the members of his lab at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada study sex-related aspects of the structure and function of the nervous system, with ongoing grant support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. His work on topics ranging from the effects of steroids on cell survival, to the neural control of reproductive behavior, to human cognitive sex differences has appeared in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Neuroscience, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, and Brain Research. Dr. Watson received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. Following a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley, he joined the faculty at SFU in 1996 where he is now Professor of Neuroscience in the Department of Psychology. He teaches biological psychology to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students each year. S. Marc Breedlove, the Barnett Rosenberg Professor of Neuroscience at Michigan State University, has written over 130 scientific articles investigating the role of hormones in shaping the developing and adult nervous system, publishing in journals including Science, Nature, Nature Neuroscience, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. He is also passionate about teaching-in the classroom, and in the greater community through interviews with the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, New York Times, and Newsweek, as well as broadcast programs such as All Things Considered, Good Morning America, and Sixty Minutes. He has active grant support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Breedlove is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Psychological Science.

Pretty good

Very interesting textbook. Easy to read even though the subject material is dense. It can take a while to really wrap your mind around it all. My Biopsych class in Fall I think was one of the first to use it so the website wasn't completely functional yet which kind of sucked. It lacked those extra study resources. It is cool to have a book that has such up to date information in it. Even mentions Pixar's Inside Out which just came out earlier this year.

This is precisely what Mr Waley does, approaching deliberately from several different angles: political, economic, religious, artistic and intellectual. Above all he is guided by a central thread, which is the growth of power in the state and the reflection of this in the development of political ideas."The Times Educational Supplement The book opens with a description of monarchies and city states in the thirteenth century, and draws to a close with a contrasting account of political philosophies current at the time of Machiavelli, and how they related to the conditions of the early sixteenth century. From the divine right of kings to the unification of Spain, the account takes in a whole period and an entire continent. This extensively revised and expanded third edition includes even greater use of contemporary voices, full reading lists, and new chapters on East Central Europe and Portuguese exploration which take the narrative beyond the confines of western Europe. Daniel Waley is a former Professor of History at the University of London and Keeper of Manuscripts at the British Library. Peter Denley teaches at Queen Mary, University of London.

A quality survey of the Late Middle Ages

Scholarly materials dedicated to the late Middle Ages are not always easy to locate. This book, despite the fact that it is basically a textbook, is engaging and interesting. It gives a relatively detailed overview of the period and contains some solid analysis of this transitional period in European history. I thought the prose was good and overall this book was insightful despite the fact that it covered such a wide range of material.

Detailed but poorly written Medieval history

There is no doubt that the author knows his stuff. He provides a thorough introduction to the major themes of the late Medieval/early Renaissance period. However, he has all the flair of a mortician and he systematically sucks the oxygen out of the subject. Furthermore, his writing style uses awkward sentence constructions that leave the reader stumbling through his prose, getting lost, bogged down and frustrated. As an avid historian, I now understand why some people have grown up hating the subject.

About the Author

Grant Shipley is a Senior Manager at Red Hat. Really, this means he is an OpenShift PaaS Evangelist focused on cloud technologies. Prior to that, Grant was a Manager of Software Development with responsibilities over the www.redhat.com website and supporting infrastructure. Grant has over 15 years of software development experience focusing on Java and PHP. In his free time, he contributes to several open source projects as well as developing iOS applications. Martin Ingrouille is a senior lecturer in botany in the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, Birkbeck, University of London. He teaches and co-ordinates courses in plant science, evolutionary biology and conservation biology.

Bill Eddie is a lecturer in botany and ornithology for the Open Studies programme of the Office of Lifelong Learning at the University of Edinburgh.

the information in this book is expressed rather incoherently and in a non-linear fashion. the illustrations are crude and very poorly match the text. The descriptions of physiological processes alternated between that of a 5th grade science book and that of a postgraduate thesis. in all I found it unenjoyable,uninspiring,frustrating,unconducive to the encouragement of students of botany and above all unhelpful. I would recommend this book to nobody unless he is in need of a doorstop or a coaster.

Tired of waiting

I wrote a review earlier about this company and was told that a book would be overnighted out A.S.A.P.on 08-25-10 by them. It is now 08-30-10 and still no book. I need to ask amazon for a refund and go through the hassel of getting my money back to get my book. Please beware of this company and think twice before buying from this company.
